I imagine that the section on the use of the horn in the Indian driver's handbook (assuming there is such a handbook) reads something like this.
If someone is in your lane, honk your horn
If you see someone you know, honk your horn
If someone is about to hit you, honk your horn
If you are about to hit someone, honk your horn
If you are a taxi and you want to catch a potential fares attention, honk your horn
If you are a taxi and a fare tries to flag you down but you are full, honk your horn
If you see a pedestrian on the side of the road and might hit him, honk your horn
If you see a pedestrian on the side of the road and can easily avoid him, honk your horn
If you're happy and you know it, honk your horn
Bottom line: Travellers are best advised to get rooms away from busy streets.
