Wow!
What do you get when you have 300 elephants in one area?
A lot of poop...and a really good show!
This weekend in Surin was the 47th annual elephant round-up. Even the name sounds impressive, and it certainly exceeded all expectations. The show consisted of 12 acts, 300 elephants and 2000 performers. It was a huge production in every sense of the word! But it was not a circus. The acts were well choreographed and we had mini radios that broadcast an English version of the program explaining traditional work of the elephant in war, work and life of local Thais. The highlight for me was the actual roundup when they brought all the animals into the stadium. It was so powerful seeing all these beautiful massive animals together.
