(I started a draft of this post a long time ago, sorry about the delay)...
It is past Christmas...and we have been out of Thailand for over a month, but I have been itching to write about the king of Thailand. (a different kind of itching than the last posting, thank goodness).
Here is a nice little photo series of the celebration of his 80th birthday.

We just missed his actual birthday, but were caught in the build up to the celebrations. People have such a reverence for him, unlike anything I have ever seen. I am so accustomed to hearing criticism of our leaders that I found myself at first skeptical of all the positive I heard about him. As I listened to more people, I became less and less of a skeptic.
He has been involved in eliminating opium crops in Northern Thailand and replacing them with sustainable, responsible agriculture. He is greatly respected for his love for his people and actions to aid the poverty stricken. And, as you have seen in the photos, thousands of people gather when he makes a public appearance.
As a Christian, I have repeatedly heard God named the King of kings. Now that I have witnessed the actions of a human king I have a much greater appreciation for what it means to be the King of kings.
