Tactic, Guatemala - Since Steve wrote last, we have found a new home! Some of you may remember an Edmonton Jounal newspaper article about a young family from Edmonton working with Impact Ministries in Guatemala (see zaakistan.com). Well, they generously offered us the use of their home while they spend a month in Edmonton over the Chistmas season. It is a comfortable two bedroom place, quite a bit larger than our loft was in Edmonton. We have really been enjoying 'playing house'. We can cook for ourselves, we have been set up with a computer, internet, fireplace, movie collection, and a cell phone. We have a place to relax besides our hostel room, and...there is a game of Settlers in the game cupboard (now we just have to find who they played it with)!
Thursdays are market day in town, so we got up early and headed out to stock up the kitchen. We got beef, chicken, a couple dozen eggs, and lots and lots of fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, limes, oranges, peppers etc). The best part was that it only cost us 120. That's Quetzals not dollars (20 CDN).
We are enjoying getting to know the people here. They have been very welcoming and we have already been invited to join a family for Christmas dinner. Thinking about Christmas away from friends and family is still pretty tough but we're relieved to not be holed up in a hostel somewhere with no one to enjoy the season with.
It looks as though there will be plenty for us to work on here and so we will plan to stay through to mid-January.
Please feel free to give us a call. Incoming calls are free... for us. The internet connection at our house is a little slower, so Skype isn't as good an option. We'd love to hear from you! 011 (502) 5581-6650 should get you through when calling from Canada. We are 1 hour ahead of Alberta.
