Maybe it's just me, but I have often considered what it would be like if all the people around me were frozen in space and time. I would wander around, wave my hands in peoples faces, go where ever I wanted and basically act like a kid. Imagine the freedom.
Well, it happened yesterday at 6pm! I was buying my Skytrain ticket from the machine and when I turned around, the throngs of people surrounding me and Steve had stopped moving...completely! After the fleeting thoughts wondering why I was still moving and no one else was, I vaguely heard the Thai national anthem being broadcast through the station. In an act of patriotism and reverence to the king, all actions are momentarily paused while the anthem plays every day at 6pm. Security guards stood, well, on guard. Passengers on their way home after a day at the office stood at allegiance in the turnstile and I looked around uncomfortably, wondering if anyone noticed me purchasing my ticket after the song had started.
Now, you see, we have experienced the anthem in several settings, but none as stark as this one. I appreciate the patriotism of the Thai people. I wonder where I will be tonight at 6pm...
