Chiang Mai Thailand
We're still exploring volunteer options in Northern Thailand. We have a few leads but nothing has come through yet. In the meantime, things are pretty relaxed. Things like thai massages, internet, food, clothing, and coffee are all quite inexpensive so you can guess what's occupying our time. Just to give you an idea, Mary is in the process of revamping her wardrobe with a clothes budget of $30. I particularly like her new "hippie shirt" that will go really well with our westphalia back in Canada.
Here's just a few more observations of things that are just like Canada and some things that are very different.
Same-7/11s are the ubiquitous convenience store
Different-In many countries we've observed small scooters as the main mode of family transport (up to 6 on a scooter). Here in Thailand we saw a lady driving a scooter and perched behind her on the seat was a mid sized dog.
Same-A used english book will cost about $5 in the Wee Book Inn equivalent.
Different-Today we had a shrimp dish with our rice. They don't waste any part of the shrimp as heads, tails, antennae, and shells were all included. Picking shell pieces and antennae out of your teeth and gums is not my idea of fun.
Same-We've seen numerous Starbucks in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai
Different-The steering wheel is on the right side of the car and people drive on the left side of the road. This makes looking both ways before crossing the street doubly important for us North Americans.
Same-The average urban Thai person wears t-shirt and jeans. The only "traditional" thai clothing you see is on tourists.
